Saihō-ji is located in Nishikyō-ku, Kyoto City, and was established as a Rinzai sect temple during the Nara period. About 120 types of moss cover the precincts, and it is called “Koke-dera” because of its beauty resembling a green carpet.
The garden is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the country and is also registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. The garden is divided into two levels: the upper level is a dry landscape garden, and the lower level is a pond stroll garden with three islands named Asahijima, Yūhijima, and Kasumijima. The moss began to cover the garden in the late Edo period.
Visiting Saihō-ji requires advance application, and the visit date and time are specified at the time of application. The admission fee starts from 4,000 yen as a donation. Please check the official website for the latest information and reservation methods.
Access is convenient via Kyoto Bus stop “Koke-dera / Suzumushi-dera” or City Bus stop “Suzumushi-dera / Koke-dera Michi.”
Inside the garden, walking areas are limited to protect the moss, so visitors need to be careful not to damage the moss. During crowded times, it is recommended to allow plenty of time and wear comfortable shoes.
