Day 1: Retro Walk in Kitamachi

The journey begins at Hannyaji Temple. Founded in the Asuka period, its highlights include the Kamakura period tower gate and Japan’s largest thirteen-story stone pagoda. The cosmos flowers are beautiful, and the “Cosmos Amulet” that boosts fortune is also popular.

Within walking distance is Uemura Farm, established in Meiji 16, the oldest farm in Nara City, where you can enjoy freshly milked milk and soft serve ice cream.

Next, head to Mukide Soy Sauce Brewery. Founded in Meiji 12, this traditional soy sauce brewery features soy sauce with a deep flavor made over two years.

At the Sange Art Museum, you can admire sange shaped like lotus petals and experience drawing your own guardian Buddha through the Shabutsu Sange experience.

The Nara Women’s University Memorial Hall, built in the late Meiji period, is a beautiful building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan that you can tour.

Day 2: Stroll Through Imaicho, Where Edo-Period Townscapes Remain

Start from the Imaicho Townscape Exchange Center Hanaura, and visit historic buildings such as the Kawai Residence, Shonenji Temple, and Imanishi Residence.

Also visit Imaicho Machiyakan, the former Kometani Residence, and Ofusa Kannon, where you can feel the atmosphere of the Edo period.

The Fujiwara Palace Ruins are also included in the walking course, a spot where you can feel the depth of history.

Points and Precautions for Inbound Travelers

Walking is the basic way to explore Kitamachi and Imaicho in Nara. Use of public transportation is recommended; if by car, use nearby coin-operated parking lots, and allow extra time during busy periods.

Since some facilities change their visiting hours and fees depending on the season, please check the latest information on official websites before visiting.

Experiences such as the Shabutsu Sange may require reservations, so advance booking is recommended.

Comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to Nara’s climate make for a pleasant stroll. Don’t forget measures against heat or cold and to bring drinks.

Rickshaw rides are also available and convenient as a means of transportation when tired. Please check reservations and fees in advance.
